ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture is the insertion of very fine, single use sterile needles (on average 0.18mm thick) into specific locations on the body called acupoints. Acupuncture points are located along 12 main channels called meridians, which run vertically along the front and back of the body. This meridian system is a network of 'vessels' for the flow of the body's life-force called Qi (pronounced Chee). The acupoints are where Qi can be accessed and influenced. Acupuncture promotes the movement of Qi & Blood, strengthens weakness, reduces excesses & stimulates the body's own healing response. After conducting a comprehensive Chinese Medicine diagnosis, the practitioner will select acupuncture points on various points of the body to help restore and maintain your body's natural balance. Acupuncture treatments are generally painless. The sensation associated with needle insertion is a dull ache which lasts for a millisecond, after which you will not feel any needle sensation. Needles are then retained for 10-30 minutes, during which time you will be allowed to relax, close your eyes, meditate or sleep while the acupuncture takes effect.

HERBAL MEDICINE

Chinese herbs are effective in treating a wide range of health conditions with little to no side effects. It is based on a rich body of knowledge developed over thousands of years of clinical practice. For almost any health condition your body can create, there is an herbal formula that is designed specifically to target that problem.

A prescription containing 5-20 will be tailored specifically for your health requirements. The term 'herbs' encompasses plant material, minerals and a small number of animal products.

Herbal formulas can be prepared in several different forms and are generally taken morning & night: -

RAW HERBS: A bag of herbs in raw form that you boil & then drink the remaining liquid, called a decoction. This process can be time consuming & the taste unpalatable. Its strengths lie in the fact that it is quickly and easily absorbed into the body, can be tailored to your specific needs and provides excellent therapeutic benefits.

GRANULES: Herbs are concentrated & powdered for ease of use. They can be simply dissolved in water & taken. Due to the amount of processing involved in their production they tend to be more expensive than raw herbs but provide comparable results to the raw herbs.

TINCTURE: Herbs are steeped in an alcohol solution for several weeks. This removes the need for boiling herbs but formulas are less tailored.

PATENT PILLS: Traditional herbal formulas processed into pills. They are a convenient way to take herbal medicine and useful for people who are time poor or who have a sensitive palate to drinking herbs. Pills are not as potent as raw or granule herbs & less tailored.

MOXIBUSTION & CUPPING

MOXIBUSTION & CUPPING

Moxibustion is a form of heat therapy which involves the burning of a Chinese herb called mugwort on or near an acupuncture point to warm the area and meridian-organ system. The herb comes pre-rolled as a cigar which is then lit and held close to the skin and then removed before it becomes too hot for the patient. A loose form of the herb is sometimes moulded into cone shapes which are then placed directly on the skin or on top of a slice of ginger or layer of salt. The burning herb is removed before becoming too hot and leaves no burning or scarring on the skin.

Cupping is a process in which a vacuum is created inside a glass cup which is then placed onto the skin. The vacuum then gently draws the skin and caused increased circulation to the area. The purpose is to encourage the flow of Qi & Blood and to eliminate pathogens and toxins from the body. Sometimes cupping can leave marking on the skin that looks similar to a bruise, which usually disappears within a few days depending on the level of discolouration.

Cupping & Moxibustion are often used as part of an acupuncture treatment.

MASSAGE & GUA SHA

Regular therapeutic massage can be an important part of your health and wellness plan. Massage is used to encourage the natural flow of Qi and blood throughout muscles and the body’s meridians to alleviate pain, remove blockages, harmonise the mind & body and improve general wellbeing.

Relaxation massage is a full-body oil massage. This includes your back, neck, face, shoulders, arms, legs, feet and hands.  The primary purpose is to help you relax using light pressure and smooth, gliding strokes. During a relaxation massage there is less emphasis on working out adhesions or knots in the muscle tissue. It is a great way to alleviate emotional and physical stress.

Tui Na is a Chinese remedial massage that works in a similar way to acupuncture but without the use of needles. This technique stimulates acupressure points and meridians to help relieve muscular pain & spasms, joint stiffness, arthritic pain, relieve stress and promote overall health and wellbeing.

Gua Sha involves the use of tools such as spoons to scrape the skin along the meridians, channels and points on the skin surface. This process improves blood circulation to muscles, tissues and organs directly beneath the surface treated to help stiffness, pain and mobility. It also helps restore metabolic processes by improving nutrient delivery and waste removal systems of the body and stimulating immune function.
